Why do people go to board prep courses?
Well the answer is to get ready for that fateful day when “just answer ‘C’” is not the best strategy.

In our course we create time sensitive sessions of mini-exams and then in small class room settings review the answers, discuss the material, and entertain your questions in our highly personalized style. Let us emphasis this point again…. highly personalized style.

Remember freshman chemistry in college? Remember the lecture hall? Remember anything from that experience? EXACTLY! At Board Stiff Live® small is big!!! Sessions will be no more than 20 candidates per room. You can not get real attention in a concert hall. We want to practice you in the exam experience and show you how to pick the best answer. Look, if you have not read the text books no course will help. But if every time you do practice exams and can think of 17 reasons why each answer could be right or wrong you need experts to break down the process and lead you on to fame, fortune and well…the oral exam!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ):

How Large are the Board Stiff Live® Written Board Classes?
We believe strongly in the small group sessions. For our written board courses we will have no more than 20 candidates in a room/per faculty. You won’t need opera glasses and super sonic hearing for our sessions.

Where do Board Stiff Live® Questions Come From?
Our questions have been culled through years of experiences from 100s of Board Certified Anesthesiologists. Are some of the questions from the actual boards? Well yes, we are not deaf when people tell us what questions they were given. But if anyone claims to have “the list” of written board questions, please call the FBI.

How do Board Stiff Live® Sessions for Written Boards Work?
There is no magic. We will start our sessions off with the 50 board type questions ranging from physics for anesthesia to pulmonary physiology. Every sub-specialty will be covered including the emerging topics (TEE, Ultra-sound regional, simulation, safety) which are all fair game.
After the exam your “class” will go over the test. We will review the answers, explain and take questions so that you will know not only the right answer to that particular question but why it was the right answer.

Sound simple right? Sounds like every other course, right? Sounds you could just buy a review book and have the same experience….? NOPE. At Board Stiff Live our success is built on personalized teaching. Unlike some courses, held in auditoriums the size of Rockefeller Center, at Board Stiff Live our small group sessions encourage participation.

Is there any time for lectures?
During our answer and explanation portion we are happy to discuss a topic. We can usually tell which they are by those “deer in the headlights” looks. Our vast experience, academic and clinical work makes this possible.

What will I learn if I come to Board Stiff Live®?
Well you already took the boards right? It was called in-service exams. Hopefully you had continued to read and keep up with the great expectations from year to year. However there were always questions that nagged you. There were multiple answers that you lingered over time and time again. At Board Stiff Live® we want you to be able to directly look at the fundamental question the Board is posing to you and find the answer they hope you will give them.

What makes Board Stiff Live® better than any other course?
Unparalleled small group size.
Intense, “over learning” environment.

Look, in one weekend no course can impart the knowledge of three years of study. If you think someone can, might we suggest using your money more wisely on a great weekend in Cancun instead?

What we can offer is the intense small learning style that you will one day pay handsomely for in sending your children to private school.

Where is it Held?
At this time we will be holding the Board Stiff Live Written Board courses in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and, of course, our home base in Fort Lauderdale.

What is the Cost?
The weekend course is $1295. We will include our question book for you to keep, highlight, frame or simply decoupage.

Upon registration, full payment is required. Students may cancel their registration without question prior to the start of the course. Cancellations occurring greater than 10 days before the course will receive a full refund. Cancellations occurring within 10 days of the course will receive a refund minus a $400 processing fee.

Do we get anything else for our tuition?
Well now that you mention it, we will be issuing copies of our never to be published Board Stiff Returns. Why are we giving this away you ask? Especially with the phenomenal success of Board Stiff and Board Stiff Too? Well because we want you to see the questions we asked during the course for your own review. Circle the weird things that you didn’t recall so you can look up the baricity of Mepivicaine, the urine osmolality in Diabetes Insipidus the half life of Depodur.

Hotel Arrangements:
Lodging arrangements are ultimately the candidate’s responsibility. You need not stay at the host hotel, but we have a block of rooms reserved at a discount rate at each site (see the Course Schedule). We make every effort to stretch your dollar … we know this process ain’t cheap!

You are ready to get serious and focus on the oral exam. Perhaps you have already failed once or twice; what do you need?...practice, practice and more practice!!! Look, you have already reviewed. You have passed the written exams. Big compendiums presented as “secret information” are called text books. You should have read them already. Adding a hefty tome to your shelf will impress your in-laws but they do not help you pass an oral exam.
Cue cards, cheat sheets and condensed lists, are great for looking something up in your O.R. Sadly, the board examiners are not going to sit and allow you look up the differential diagnosis for a desaturating patient. Besides there will be questions you simply do not know the answer to…how do you handle that?

Adding sample exams on audio is nice if you are learning Swahili. But if the answers you are spewing back are worthless how are you going to know? Who is critiquing you? Correcting you?

So what do you need? You need intensive mock drills in small groups. You need people who can start with a complicated stem question and knowledgeably go in a myriad of directions. You need practicing, academic faculty that do this each and every day, time after time and can give you the immediate feedback to keep you on track.

Other courses pack you in to big lecture halls. What’s the teacher to student ratio? 1 to 50? 1 to 150? Does it do you any good to sit and watch someone else do a test while you sit out in a big lecture hall? No!!!

What is the student to teacher ratio at Board Stiff Live? 1 to 4.
NO OTHER COURSE MATCHES OUR PERSONALIZED SERVICE.
NO OTHER COURSE HAS SO MANY TEACHERS.
NOTHING CAN MATCH OUR STUDENT TO TEACHER
RATIO, NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!
How Large are the Board Stiff Live® Oral Board Classes?
We believe strongly in the small group sessions. For our oral board courses we keep our ratio to 4 students per examiner. One student at a time will rotate into the “hot seat” with the other students acting as junior examiners.

Where do Board Stiff Live® Questions Come From?
Our questions have been culled through years of experiences from 100s of Board Certified Anesthesiologists. Are some of the questions from the actual boards? Well yes, we are not deaf when people tell us what questions they were given. But if anyone claims to have “the list” of oral board questions, please call the FBI.

How do Board Stiff Live® Sessions for Oral Boards Work?
There is no smoke and mirrors. No complicated algorithm. Our mock orals work in a 4 man rotation, keeping each participant actively involved. One student will be the examinee in the Oral Board process with an examiner trained in nearly-exact Oral Board Examinations. We start with a stem question from our exhaustive compilations and quiz you through all aspects of the anesthetic management in a time limited manner. We finish each round with a host of grab-bag questions and then proceed to evaluation. Sound familiar? Sound like the boards? BINGO!

The other candidates will act as junior examiners and participate in the post exam critique. This assures that you will learn from your responses and other’s sessions. Not in a huge auditorium! auditorium! auditorium! echo, echo , echo, echo. Hello!? See the difference yet?

Is there any time for lectures?
We want to give you as much mock oral face time as possible. But at lunch or evening breaks we find candidates have weaknesses in one or more areas (i.e. pacemakers, ventilator management, etc.) During these breaks we will offer a short discussion on those topics as they come up. The topics for our extemporaneous reviews come from you. Our vast experience, academic and clinical work makes this possible. You are free to listen in, eat, or continue with small group exams. In addition we will offer quick refresher sessions (yeah for a small fee) on Friday evening. Why? Because if you have been doing cardiothoracic fellowship for a year you might not recall the contraindications of Pitocin or some of the other common areas in sub-specialty care.

What will I learn if I come to Board Stiff Live®?
You will be versed in the Oral Board environment and tone (short of the uncomfortable suit and shoes you will be wearing for the actual exam).

You will receive feedback to improve your answers, will become aware of the common pitfalls, and will learn ways to avoid “digging your self and your patient in to a hole”.

You will learn what your Oral examiners expect.

You will know how to answer exam questions clearly, succinctly, and precisely.

What makes Board Stiff Live® better than any other course?
Unparalleled small group size.
Near-exact Oral Board Examinations.
Intense, “over learning” environment.
When evaluating a course offering mock orals one should ask how many exams will I be given? How many candidates per instructor? Is there highly personalized critiquing? Being in an auditorium full of people in the same situation is comforting but not very helpful.

Where is it held?
From our home base in south Florida we have launched Board Stiff Live ® in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and, of course, our home base in Fort Lauderdale. We strive for convenience and respect for your finances.

What is the Cost?
After listening closely to our clients we have devised a straight forward menu.

We offer a complete two day intensive mock oral course (Saturday and Sunday) for $1995.

Our past students who repeat the course receive a $500 discount ($1450).

For those who can arrive earlier and are wanting more, we have an additional “mock" oral session on Friday for the additional cost of $395.

Upon registration, full payment is required. Students may cancel their registration without question prior to the start of the course. Cancellations occurring greater than 10 days before the course will receive a full refund. Cancellations occurring within 10 days of the course will receive a refund minus a $400 processing fee.

Why are our fees higher?
Do the math. We have one Board Certified practicing academic anesthesiologist for every four applicants over two days. Yes, we could charge less, yes we could have a lecture hall for drills, and a power point slide show, yes, we could increase our ratio of 1 examiner to 10, 15 or 20 candidates but that is not very personalized…it is an orgy!

Well now that you mention it, we will be issuing copies of our never to be published Board Stiff Returns. Why are we giving this away you ask?
